AMP-EMBODY

Advanced Methodology and Practice of Embodiment Design in Product Engineering

Το Εργαστήριο Στοιχείων Μηχανών Ε.Μ.Π. συνδιοργανώνει το AMP-EMBODY, ένα μικρής διάρκειας εντατικό πρόγραμμα σπουδών (intensive programme), στα πλαίσια του γνωστού ευρωπαϊκού πλαισίου συνεργασίας ακαδημαϊκών ιδρυμάτων Erasmus.

40 σπουδαστές και 12 διδάσκοντες από το Τεχνικό Πανεπιστήμιο του Ντέλφτ (TU Delft), το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο (ΕΜΠ), το Τεχνολογικό Ινστιτούτο της Καρλσρούης (Karlsruher Institut fur Technologie – KIT) και το Ομοσπονδιακό Πολυτεχνείο της Ζυρίχης (ETH-Zurich) θα συνεργαστούν για διάστημα δυόμιση εβδομάδων, σε μια κοινή διαδρομή με στόχο τη διερεύνηση κι εφαρμογή πρακτικών αριστείας σε θέματα μηχανολογικού σχεδιασμού σύνθετων βιομηχανικών προϊόντων με τη χρήση προηγμένων μεθόδων κι εργαλείων.

Στο χρονικό διάστημα μεταξύ 7-7-2013 και 25-7-2013 θα παρουσιαστούν (με τη μορφή περιορισμένου αριθμού διαλέξεων), θα εφαρμοστούν και θα αναλυθούν προηγμένες μέθοδοι κι επιτυχημένες πρακτικές της σύγχρονης βιομηχανικής πραγματικότητας, με βάση πραγματικές περιπτώσεις μηχανολογικού σχεδιασμού προϊόντων τεχνολογικής αιχμής.

Τόπος διεξαγωγής του προγράμματος: TU Delft, Delft, Ολλανδία.

Η επίσημη γλώσσα διεξαγωγής του προγράμματος είναι η αγγλική.

“Genesis of ideas”

Γένεσις (Genesis) + ιδέα (idea): spontaneous or methodology-induced novel ideas

The scope of the CSiAED 2013 symposium is to investigate the ground on which novel ideas are harboured and manifest themselves as either spontaneous ones or in a systematic / sustained flow in the context of advanced engineering design, whereby ‘advanced’ implies non-trivial state-of-the-art methods and tools.

It was in November 2010 when CSiAED 2010 took place in TU Delft, as the first in a line of symposia by TU Delft and NTU Athens titled “Case Studies in Advanced Engineering Design”.

The symposium has three goals:

  • To get a sharper view on the nature of design and engineering projects in high-tech firms and leading institutions. This will be done through guest lectures on case studies to a wide TU Athens audience (students, alumni, other guests).
  • To bring together the experts in design and engineering from TU Athens with experts from high-tech firms and institutions to discuss the utilisation of knowledge, methods and practices (including a real time questionnaire survey and subsequent focused workshops).
  • To create a reference book. The contributions by the representatives from the leading firms and institutions will be edited and rearranged as chapters in a book, the aim being to produce a reference work of clear educational value that illustrates the most rigorous (and brilliant) aspects of engineering design. Therefore the focus will be on advanced applied methods with a solid theoretical background (cutting edge, high academic standard).

Prof. Dr. V. Spitas, Dr. G. Kaisarlis (National TU Athens) and Prof. Dr. C. Spitas (TU Delft) will chair the symposium and edit its proceedings. The hosting institute will be the National Technical University of Athens, Laboratory of Machine Elements (ME).

A limited number of experts will, after invitation, present case studies from the development of advanced products illustrating (parts of) the following:

  1. problem identification – fuzzy front end (where applicable)
    1. 1.1) seed idea generation
    2. 1.2) market analysis
    3. 1.3) user study
    4. 1.4) design brief
  2. engineering: advanced working methods
    1. 2.1) conceptualisation
    2. 2.2) modelling (multiphysics)
    3. 2.3) analysis (incl. methods, build-up of complexity, fidelity, convergence)
    4. 2.4) design / embodiment
    5. 2.5) validation / prototyping
    6. 2.6) detailing / industrialisation
  3. project management
    1. 3.1) design team synthesis
    2. 3.2) project roadmaps and workflows / contingency plann
    3. 3.3) management & tracking (incl. metrics)

The deployment and consistent usage of metrics for evaluating and decision making are an important criterion in selecting content, as is the use of advanced methods.

A strong contribution of each case study in part 2 is very important in the context of the symposium. The symposium will focus on 8 fully fledged case studies, each addressing a different problem and possibly using different advanced methods/paradigms. The focus will be on the cutting-edge parts of the case studies, as appropriate. The choice of the focus will be an important decision for each case study, so that case studies complement each other in a meaningful whole, as per their special strengths. The underlying requirement and chief uniting element of all studies and parts thereof will be rigorous modelling. Of particular interest will be the systematic usage of metrics in the design and decision making process. The editor shall be in contact with each expert to assure the optimality of each contribution in the bigger symposium context.

Enough information should be given to provide a full understanding of each case study, incl. its context, and allow reproduction of the methods used and at least an understanding of the results achieved. To avoid intellectual property conflicts, contributions should be authorised by the holders of any intellectual property disclosed therein.

The symposium is a two-day event, to be held on 17-18 May 2013. The venue is the Multimedia Auditorium of TU Athens (Friday, May 17th) and the Laboratory of Machine Elements, TU Athens, Building M (Saturday, May 18th).

The symposium social event for the speakers will take place at the Acropolis Museum restaurant overlooking the Acropolis, after a guided tour in the museum starting at 19:30.

Specially prepared propositions will be put forward for discussion among the 1st day speakers and guests from the industry. Minutes will be kept and edited for later publication. A social programme will then follow.

After the symposium the case studies presented and discussed in the symposium will be edited, also taking into account pertinent feedback given in the symposium, to form chapters in a dedicated textbook bearing the same title as the symposium.

Also, the minutes of the workshop will be edited into a dedicated chapter in the same book.

Important thematic considerations for any case study are (these are only guidelines):

Genesis: Placing ideas in a particular context can be the staring point of design. Can you retrace the genesis of the original ideas during design development of your case study?

Identity: The object of design (be it a product, process or machine/apparatus), or some aspect thereof, should have a ‘strong’ identity (i.e. mission critical, societally relevant, challenging to make/first of a kind, etc) that makes it interesting to study. What is interesting about your case study?

Disciplinary integration: Engineering design is by definition a multi-disciplinary endeavour, involving a large range of disciplines and correspondingly experts. In the presence of strong couplings in the context of a given design problem, disciplinary integration can be more effective than applying a parallel use of disciplines (in effect an attempt at decoupling the problem to make it treatable by different experts). What is the level of integration (if needed) in your disciplinary treatment? How did you define metrics (quantitative/qualitative) and apply them rigorously?

Innovation (and innovation management): Innovation is a mission-critical component of design & development. How did you perform (and stimulate, manage) it?

Skills: Engineering design requires a wide range of skills, ranging from proficiency in several types of calculus, to ICT/CAD/CAE, to factual knowledge of materials, structural properties etc, to creativity and workflow management methods etc. Which skills were important in your design process and how?

This event is funded by the Laboratory of Machine Elements of The National Technical University of Athens.

All case study contributions are explicitly invited; therefore no fees to participating contributors are applicable. Participants will still be responsible for their stay and traveling arrangements.
